Keep the politics out of the classroom, would ya?

Allow me to disclaim that I am neither a supporter of the government nor the opposition. Both are as corrupt as my old hard drive lah.

I have an unapologetically staunch supporter of BN in one of my classes. And sometimes, on very bad days, I have to listen to her make extremely smart political comments such as:

On the issue of nepotism:

"Mestilah kerajaan akan menolong keluarga diorang dulu sebelum tolong rakyat. Macam kita lah. Kalau kamu jadi Perdana Menteri, siapa kamu nak tolong dulu? Keluarga kamu atau rakyat?"

My thoughts:

"Sejak bila moto kerajaan kita bertukar menjadi "Keluarga Didahulukan, Rakyat Diabaikan"?"

On the issue of rising prices of practically everything:

"Cuba banding negara kita dengan Singapura. Barangan di Singapura lagi mahal, kan?"

My thoughts:

"Cuba banding gaji rakyat kita dengan Singapura. Gaji di Singapura lagi tinggi, kan?"

On the issue of licking the goverment's arse in order to get what we want:

"Kita kenalah bodek untuk dapatkan apa kita nak. Macam dengan Tuhan. Kita bodek Tuhan kan kalau kita nak mintak apa-apa? Samalah dengan kerajaan."

My thoughts:

"Pertama, sejak bila kerajaan sama taraf dengan Tuhan? Kedua, kita tak bodek Tuhan, kita menyembah-Nya demi cinta kita kepada-Nya. Ketiga, apasal kena bodek baru diorang nak jalankan tugas diorang?"

On the issue of the government's general ineptitude:

"Kamu orang muda ni tak bersyukur. Tengok apa kita ada; keamanan, pembangunan..."

My thoughts:

"Memanglah bersyukur. Dah banyak diorang buat. But that doesn't mean there is no room for improvement. Come on lah."

Ask your friend if she's ever read "The Malay Dilemma". Essential reading tu.. I recommend it to anyone who admits they are Malaysian.. Banned genius it was.. Now it isn't banned anymore, but still genius.. :)

This member of the Ignorati... Is he/she for real?

I don't even know what to say about her views on nepotism. It is that stupidly unbelievable.

And nak banding barangan kat Singapore dengan yang kat Malaysia? Hello. Like you mentioned, Singaporeans obviously earn more. And hello, doesn't s/he know anything about currency exchange rates? Barangan kat Singapore are only considered expensive to people who come from countries where their currency's worth less.

What she said about membodek Tuhan is so offensive. Does s/he know what bodek means? When you bodek, you're not sincere. You bodek when you have an agenda, when you wanna stroke someone's ego in order to get what you want. Praying is not bodeking. Anisah, I am at a loss for words.

Oh I absolutely hate it when people say, 'kita patut bersyukur dengan apa yang kerajaan kita dah bagi! Tengoklah negara kita yang aman ni... berbanding dengan [insert war torn third world country here]. Yes, I bersyukur cuz Malaysia's got such a variety of cultures and we are a peaceful country (albeit with loads of issues beneath the seemingly calm surface), but we need to stop comparing ourselves to countries that are worse off than ours. That's a bit like telling everyone to rest on their laurels. Like settling with a grade C just cuz a majority of the class got D's.

Look at other more successful countries where governments actually serve their people (instead of the other way round!), and then you'll realize how much better off we can actually be if our government puts taxpayers' money- OUR MONEY- to good use. Millions are wasted on unnecessary spending here. And WE are the ones paying for the government's reckless shopping sprees. We pay road tolls, for education, for health care, bills, etc., and we hardly know where all that money goes to. In many other countries, the people don't have to worry about poverty and paying for all of the above, cuz their govt knows how to put the taxpayers' money to good use.

I don't think Malaysians realise how behind we really are, and how awesome we could really be. I think if this person you're talking about read more about or experiences living in a country more developed than ours, s/he'd see how much better off we could be, too. We have potential. If the govt learns how to put our money to good use, revises some of their policies, stops politicking and actually starts serving the Rakyat (for the long haul, mind you, and not only when elections are around the corner!) instead of themselves, then Vision 2020 might not be such a far out idea after all.

Aisya S: Well, the fact that you're already stating that you'll be anonymous will defeat the purpose of anonymity, innit? :P

Mie: Hahaha! Orang tua yg sokong BN, biasalah.

Syikeen: I totally agree with you. Apolitical is honestly the best way to go. And these lecturers who go on and on about their favourite political party sangat unethical. Bak kata my sister, "I can't wait for Malaysia to end up like Egypt". Tapi jangan jadi macam Libya sudah....

The statements she made are really scary, because if the people and the leaders think the way she does, then there's going to be no chance we can see this country truly progress.

Regarding the first statement (on the issue of nepotism), Islam proposes that leaders be just and equal. Those who deserve their right are to be given what they deserve, first, and and the leader's responsibility is to ensure that their basic needs are fulfilled completely. Responsibilities must be fulfilled, and in Islam, responsibilities are considered as an important task for those selected to carry them out. Therefore, they have to be JUST and actually serve the people rightfully, and not pamper their families with all the money and positions, as that is not their priority. As long as they have not fulfilled the basic needs of the people, they have not carried out their responsibility.

Comparing to Singapore or any country with expensive items just does not work economically. Comparisons are made by comparing the value of money and the average salary, which isn't even high at all here, especially regarding the latter.

The bodek part left me speechless. How on Earth can one think that we're bodek-ing God?

Seriously, people like this scare me!

nazriq: yup, mmg menakutkan.. we are led by many stupid people (not all) who only care for themselves and their family..
