This article was written a year ago, when I first entered UIA. Though it’s outdated, hope it proves useful to some people out there! :-)
Stepping foot into the IIUM Centre for Foundation Studies inevitably results in culture shock for some, especially to those who have never dared to speak a word in English without their Bahasa Inggeris teacher within ten feet of them.
Why? Because all lectures here are conducted in English. If you don’t understand a word of English, or are only able to understand English when it’s spoken v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y and. With. Pauses. Between. Each. Word, the lecturer might as well be speaking in Elvish. Within minutes through a lecture, you’ll probably be wishing you were back in your room, blissfully sleeping. Or, if you’re the type who thinks ahead, you’ll be worrying about how to cope once you start learning your core courses.
But have no fear! I am about to share with you some simple, everyday tips on improving your English outside of your classrooms.
Tip 1: Read
Everybody reads, whether it’s encyclopaedias, comics, or even the subtitles of some crappy Malay drama, but does everybody actually pause to take in the way a sentence is structured, or the way all those tenses are used? Forget about buying a textbook -- Grammar, Comprehension, Essay-Writing can all be picked up easily just by curling up on your sofa and reading some fluffy chick lit. Not only do you enjoy yourself while you read, but you’re learning how English is used at the same time. Talk about killing two bookworms with one shotgun! Keep a dictionary beside you so that you can find the meanings of all the new vocabs you come across. And, if you don’t know which novels to start with, please get in touch with me; I have a whole list I’d be more than happy to recommend to you.
Tip 2: Write
Try writing a short story or essay on anything that interests you. Refer to any novel you have to see how you should begin a paragraph, how dialogue is written, whether you should use past tense or present tense, etc. Let the creative juices flow and your imagination to get a hold of you. When you’ve got the hang of it, try developing a style of writing. In my opinion, you don’t have to use bombastic words to write a good essay; it’s the way you write that engages the reader. But of course, correct grammar and a wide vocabulary helps a lot, so practice! Have a friend or whoever that is good in English check your essay afterwards, so that you know where you went wrong or right!
Tip 3: Speak English!
You won’t go anywhere if the only time you speak English is in classrooms. Think about it; you’ve been learning English almost as long as you’ve learnt Bahasa Malaysia, so why have you mastered one so successfully, while the other makes you cringe in embarrassment? If people have been laughing at your mangled English all your life to the point that you want to give up speaking English altogether, I have one word for you: Don't. Never let people look down on you just because your spoken English isn't perfect -- there is rarely a person who does have perfect English, anyway. Too ashamed to speak English to others? No problemo; you can practise with things that definitely can’t make fun of you, like the mirror, your teddy bear, or even the cats that are strategically placed all around campus for your daily needs. (However, do be sure you're alone when doing this, otherwise you'll be labeled The Freak Who Talks To Inanimate Objects for the rest of your life on campus). Once you’ve plucked up enough courage, you can try having conversations in English with those closest to you, like your roommates or your siblings. I’m sure they’ll be more than willing to join in, whether to improve their own English or to help you out.
So, that’s all there is to it from me. I’d love to elaborate more, but I don’t want you to be late for class, or waste some of your precious nap time! Remember; never hesitate to ask for help when you need it. After all, what are friends and lecturers for?

Haah kan. Summing things up, the only reason people don't speak English is because of their own self. And ya, why the school took up all the hassles teaching grammar, this, that, when people learn so bloody damn much by reading light books eh? Ya, perhaps some people just don't get the beauty of reading, the joy of waiting for bus at bus stop while indulging yourself with, say, Vanishing Act by Jodi Picoult? :)
I also learn English by listening to songs. But don't rely on it too much, because, like you said, there are not many people out there who are a perfectly competent user. Avril Lavigne is definitely not in the list :P
avril lavigne? oh man, you didn't go to her concert, did you? :P
btw, i actually wrote this article so that Special Task could put it up on the LAC board... but they lost the hard copy and never asked me to print it out again. Wawawa!
brilliant!
you know, people always assume that I have 'good English' because I was born in Canada. While that is a factor, it definitely can't stand on it's own! (Case in point... Paris Hilton is American. But her English isn't brilliant. But the story of her mistakes can not be typed out here for public viewing. lol)
So when people ask me how I have 'good english' I tell them... I watch TV! I read! I listen to songs! Seriously, tv, books, and songs help... now I'm gonna try to apply this method in my Arabic and Malay.
oh man, same here! people always assume my fluency in English is due to growing up in England. But come on, let's get realistic here. I left England eleven years ago! I'm not surviving right now with an 8-year-old's knowledge and vocabulary of English!
Instead, I wrote, spoke and read English throughout the rest of my time in Malaysia. My BM's not bad, either, cuz I spoke only BM in school ;-)
aah, the english language issue, my favourite topic!
I think the key to master the language (and anything for that matter) is our initiative, really. Without the initiative, you wouldn't even be bothered to make a move to improve yourself. Don't bother about the people who would laugh at however 'horrible' you might be; nobody's perfect, heck I don't think my English's perfect, I think mine's jumbled up! And people can laugh all they want, but sooner or later, they'll get tired, and some will eventually be able to accept you.
An additional tip: to those who intend master the language, why not ask anyone who you feel is competent in the language to guide you and help point out any mistakes? I'm sure there are many out there willing to help out!
Although I would say, please do refer to the dictionary or at least attempt to look up the word/term before asking!!! I've had such cases quite a lot of times, and in one instance, the person asked me while he was holding a dictionary!!!
And yeah, regarding the last two comments, even in my case, people think I have good English, which is flattering. As to how to keep it up and increase your proficiency, I would say, play GOOD VIDEO GAMES (such as final fantasy!), read subtitles of ORIGINAL anime, read video game strategy guides, watch good movies, and last not least, read good blogs, such as this blog, haha!!!
just don't read the subtitles of pirated DVDs.
There was one time, Gimli said to Legolas: "You've got to toss me!"
The subtitles read: "You've got to toast me!"
HAHAHAHA... sampai sekarang aku boleh ingat lagi...
TOAST HIM? Haha!
Now that's funny!!! I know there are many funny errors in subtitles... maybe you should do a post on that!!!
good idea... why don't you do it? :P Macamlah you don't have your own blog!
haha yeah! you just gave me the idea for a new blog post! :) thanks! I should credit you if I do such a post!
Thanks for the tips....Oh btw, did you go to the Times and MPH book sale stock clearance...i went for it..got myself a few books...u mesti pergikann....
salam anisah
ur posting ni mengingatkan sy pada MUET yg akan diambil pd bulan 11 ni..huhu
moga ia dapat membantu
thanks
btw,
all of us here..
lets not forget our origin ok..
we read, watch and sing in english versions of everything, and ditch those malay ones..
why do we do that?
are we feeling shy being a malaysian?
wearing LV or armani or gucci doesnt mean that we need to speak french or latin..
malaysian speaks more like brit, and accept it..
start speaking like the americans and you'll get screwed..
americans didnt speak by the grammar..
and, speak malay if you are a malay..
dont use words such as 'kitew' or 'bwat apew' on any form of malay text..those are insulting, and its a language pollution. use proper malay..
dont get too extited over english language issues when we ourselves cant speak and write malay well enough..
yeah, just dont get too exited..
and shurfa, im not talking to you alone this time..
this article is very, very good indeed..very helpful.
"With. Pauses. Between. Each. Words"
Word, not Words.
Za, I didn't go!!!! I felt like kicking myself because no one wanted to go with me, I had no transport, and I had to go to work. Sedihnya dan sungguh jeles :-(
pemikir 21, wassalam. Ooh, tak ambik MUET lagi? Takpe, MUET lagi senang dari EPT ;-) And you have plenty of time to prepare for it, starting from now!
Megat, yes, of course we should never focus too much on English to the extent that we totally abandon our Malay. I was pissed off just as much as everyone else when Sharifah Amani admitted on stage that she couldn't speak BM well. WTF?? If you're Malay, and you're living in Malaysia, you have no excuse to not be able to converse in Malay. Why do you think I was so annoyed by the way the cast of 5 Jingga spoke?
Anon, what can I say? Typo error.
shurfa, i was just reminding everybody including myself not to get exited over it..thats all ok..
i dont know, perhaps, somebody might get too exited, on english language topics. they might be from the celpad, or elaso( english language society) or might not..
My lect actually thought I was born in the US or probably have grown up there. Yeesh. It has always been books and TV.
Some people just don’t read. Some people just can’t watch movies without the subbies. And these people have to change the way they see things or their language’s never gonna improve.
Good post. I hope this reaches out to everyone who needs help. *^^*
your post is very helpful!thanks! :D
